Bivalirudin is a direct thrombin inhibitor, which is a 20-peptide synthetic analogue of hirudin. By reversibly binding to thrombin, it inhibits the fibrinogen cleavage, activation of coagulation factors, and platelet activation mediated by thrombin, thereby exerting its anticoagulant effect.
